AE Studio Gives Back: Our May 2021 Charity Initiatives

As part of AE Studio’s mission to increase human agency for all, we’re proud and excited to donate 5% of our profits to charity every month.

When we started this initiative, we committed to donating to highly effective charities, meaning they’re high-impact and cost-effective, with hard evidence to support this. Unfortunately, some charities are less impactful than we think, and we want our money to create as much positive change as possible.

Our pledge to support these charities is part of our commitment to the effective altruism movement, which uses reasoning and careful analysis to find the best causes to work on. If we choose the right causes with the highest impact, we’ll be able to do much more good.

We also want our clients, friends, and even strangers who visit our website to feel empowered to help choose where we donate. Each month you’ll find 3 charities listed on our homepage that save or improve lives the most per dollar, and you can vote for the one you connect with most. We’re also open to recommendations, so please share a cause that’s special to you.

April’s charity poll was a tie, so we donated to two! The first was New Incentives, a charity that disburses cash incentives to caregivers in North West Nigeria conditional on infants receiving four very important vaccines:

  1. BCG (against tuberculosis)
  2. PENTA (against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type b)
  3. PCV (against pneumococcal disease)
  4. MCV (against measles)

Why does this matter so much? Childhood vaccines prevent around 2 to 3 million deaths every year. In Nigeria, where 40% of under-five deaths are from vaccine-preventable diseases, it’s especially crucial that children receive the vaccines they need at the right time.

Thankfully, New Incentives is making a difference. A randomized control trial showed that the program helped increase immunization coverage for children between 12 and 16 months, meaning more children are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases, helping them live longer, healthier lives.

Over 240,000 low-income mothers and infants have been supported in West Africa through New Incentives, and we’re thankful for the opportunity to contribute to that support.

New Incentives is increasing immunization coverage for hundreds of thousands of children.

We’re also excited to have donated last month to Against Malaria, a charity that protects people from malaria by funding long-lasting insecticidal nets.

Sleeping under these specifically designed nets is proven to be the best way to prevent malaria. At just $2 each, every 600 nets prevents the death of one child, as well as 500 to 1,000 malaria cases. And with around 400,000 deaths and over 200 million people falling ill with malaria each year, every net matters. Against Malaria’s partners distribute the nets in areas of need around the world.
